Things you need to know about Chiba University's Distance Learning

Chiba University has decided to postpone the starting date of the new academic year until May 7 and give all courses by distance learning at least until the end of July, to prevent the spread of COVID-19. We are very sorry for everyone who had been looking forward to studying on campus. Our faculty and staff members are working hard together to provide the courses, but we also need to ask your cooperation in preparing things required for distance learning courses.

1. What is distance learning? Chiba University delivers Distance Learning by using the internet and Moodle for the entire class by the following patterns.

(1) Text-based
Teachers provide the course materials, give clarification of those, or request you to submit assignments using Chiba University Moodle. Teachers also take and answer your questions on Moodle.
(2) Audio-based
Teachers provide audio commentary to clarify the course materials on Moodle. Teachers also take and answer your questions on Moodle.
(3) Video-based
Teachers provide clarification of the materials using Microsoft PowerPoint by video streaming on Moodle. Teachers also take and answer your questions on Moodle. Interactive online classes (using software/applications for video/TV meetings) will be an option when we are ready to provide you with stable internet connections.

2. Things you need to prepare

<New students>

(1) Please be sure to learn how to use Chiba University Moodle. You can find Moodle courses for each subject you register to take. On Moodle courses, you can submit assignments/quizzes and receive comments/messages from your teachers besides finding course materials.

Please visit Chiba University Moodle (at URL above) and read the user's manual before the class starts. The overview of Moodle can also be found on the page 195-196 of Guidance 2020. Your ID and password to use Moodle will be delivered to you by post (registered mail or Letter Pack). Please log in to Moodle as soon as you receive it.

Please follow the instruction (2) and (3) below.

<Continuing students>

(2) Log in to Moodle and keep yourself updated. We will inform you how to start/register courses on Moodle.
(3) Distance Learning uses audio and video in addition to text materials. Your teacher will try to prepare materials that do not require heavy data traffic, but please prepare the high speed/performance network at your locations if possible.

We are very sorry for not being able to create opportunities to explain in enough detail at on-campus guidance due to the current situation of COVID-19. Your understanding and cooperation is highly appreciated.
