Students from Singapore and Greece joined Cool Japan Program

2018.01.23

Students from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece joined Chiba University's "Cool Japan Program 2017" from the 18th to the 22nd of December. In this program students critically examined modern Japanese pop culture as well as its historical roots. Lectures were conducted by Dr. Matthew Chozick--who is known as an actor, writer and researcher of Japanese literature. Chozick led the program with an insightful and humorous lecture style under the supervision of Assistant Professor Ioannis Gaitanidis (College of Liberal Arts and Sciences).

Students participated in several field trips, including to Akihabara, Harajuku and Omotesando. They observed Tokyo's youth culture, underground music, and otaku culture. In Nakano they received a special tour from Mr. Benjamin Boas, a tourism ambassador for Nakano ward. They also received a guest lecture from Mr. Ian. F. Martin, a journalist of Japanese music and owner of Call And Response Records.

Participants experienced Japanese traditional culture, visiting Meiji Shrine, eating Japanese cuisine, and dressing in kimono at a Japanese-style inn. All participants enjoyed mingling with Chiba University students during their stay in Japan.
