"President's Choice" November 9, 2021
Covid-19 Vaccination Wayfinding System, a collaborative work with Sumida Ward, won Good Design Best 100 and Red Dot Award.
"Covid-19 Vaccination Wayfinding System," a signage system created as a joint work between Sumida Ward and Chiba University Design Research Institute (DRI), was selected as one of the Good Design Best 100 among all Good Design Award 2021. Although Chiba University has received Good Design Award several times in the past, this is the first time that the Good Design Best 100 was bestowed on the achievement from Chiba University. It is a great accomplishment that Matsudo Academic Link received Good Design Award 2021 as well. "Covid-19 Vaccination Wayfinding System" was also endowed the Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design 2021, one of the most prestigious international prizes in the design industry. Utilizing the visual communication design techniques, a team of a researcher and two students produced the signage system with the art direction of Associate Professor Ikjoon Chang at DRI. With the mission to build a new Covid-19 Vaccination system for Sumida Ward, the team sought an effective way to prevent 2Cs: Crowded places and Close-contact settings of the vaccination sites. The signs use colors and numbers familiar to all generations to indicate which stage the person is now and should be going next in an easy-to-understand manner.
In addition to the Sumida Satellite Campus, the signs are also used at other vaccination sites in Sumida Ward, Chiba University, and other universities. I am delighted that the results of Chiba University's research activities have been effectively returned to society in this way and that the public could experience the effects. Chiba University will continue to contribute to the community through research and education activities.
